Best conditions are 8-11am with the outgoing tide; whales typically breach in the deeper 60m channel about 4km offshore. Prices range $85-$140 per adult depending on trip length; family bundles under $400 for two adults and two kids are the sweet spot. The pylons light purple for the 90-minute sunset climb, and every October weekend is now sold out through the Saturday 25 October final slot — however, Tuesday and Wednesday mid-week slots still show October and November openings from 5:30pm through 8pm. The climb tops out at the Story Bridge's western pylon with a 320-degree panoramic view (the Gateway Bridge is behind you, but the CBD-to-Coot-tha spread is the money shot). Bring a warm layer — the wind at the top runs 8-10°C cooler than street level after sunset. Cost is $139 for the standard climb, $189 for the sunset-and-champagne premium. Translink has extended its summer weekend cap through Saturday 26 December 2026 — $12 unlimited travel between 4am Saturday and midnight Sunday on the CityCat plus the KittyCat ferry services. Bulimba to South Bank in 28 minutes end-to-end, Newstead to Milton in 16 minutes, and the New Farm loop is Brisbane's under-appreciated 45-minute round-trip tour with three great coffee stops. This is the cheapest and most photogenic way to show visitors the Story Bridge, the New Farm meander and the South Bank arts precinct. Kids under 5 free; go-card users get automatic capping.

Skip Suttons Beach on a busy Saturday and head north 20 minutes to Scarborough — better coffee at Morgans and the Scarborough Espresso, waterfront apartments still $200-300K cheaper than Manly, ferry-adjacent for city day trips (30-minute service to Central), plus a genuine village-feel Saturday morning at the community farmers' market at Scarborough Beach Park. Best fish-and-chips is Morgans wharf at 4pm just-out-of-the-boat trolling — expect a 20-minute queue but skip weekends. Sunset from the Redcliffe jetty is a Brisbane classic; the Redcliffe Musical Society's monthly outdoor concert (last Sunday of each month) is criminally underrated. Free parking everywhere north of the Newport bridge.

Three days, one car — Day 1 is the Point Lookout gorge walk (2.5km loop, 90 minutes with photo stops, easy grade), followed by lunch at Whales Way Café and a swim at Cylinder Beach. Day 2 is a whale-watch trip (see above) plus an afternoon at the North Gorge lookout for the migration corridor view. Day 3 is a fish-and-chips at Little Ship Club (the crumbed flathead is a religious experience) plus the Amity Point sunset from the western jetty. The Queensland Cultural Centre's Living Collection stays open on drizzle days when everyone else is dashing under the parkland shelters — a rotating display of Indigenous, Colonial and contemporary Queensland works spread across three quiet floors. Entry is free, weekend hours 10am-5pm, and the third-floor reading room has floor-to-ceiling views over the river and the CBD. The café on the ground floor (Sourcery) does the best breakfast bowl in the precinct. This is the museum locals send interstate friends to when the weather turns, and if you're travelling with older kids there's a family self-guided trail available at the front desk.
